Matchbook (“Matchbook”, “we”, “us”) is a personalized shopping recommendation platform, currently operated as an independent project by an individual based in the United States. This policy explains, in plain language, what information we work with and how we treat it. It applies to buildmatchbook.com and the Matchbook web app.

Information we work with

Style profile data. The answers you give when building your profile — your wardrobe preferences, sizing, fit frustrations, style goals, things you’d rather avoid, your usual budget, and any optional free-text note or body measurements you choose to add for better fit. Measurements are always optional and entered only by you.

Shopping preferences. The choices you make in a shopping session, such as the occasion, categories, budget for the day, and items you mark as “Not for Me”.

Account & contact details. If you create an account we store your email address for sign-in; if you join our updates list we store the email and the optional preferences you submit with it.

Basic technical data. Standard information a website receives, such as your browser type, used to keep the site working and secure. We do not use tracking or advertising analytics.

Where your data lives

By default, your profile and preferences are stored locally in your own browser (using local storage). Without an account, this data stays on your device and is not uploaded to Matchbook. Clearing your browser storage removes it.

Accounts (optional)

If you choose to create an account, your style profile, preferences, and the items you’ve marked “Not for Me” are saved to a secure database (hosted by our infrastructure provider, Supabase) so you can sync them across devices. This data is protected so that only your signed-in account can read or change it. We store your email address for sign-in; passwords are securely hashed and never visible to us. You can request deletion of your account and its data at any time by emailing us.

Style Scan photos

If you use Style Scan, the photos you upload are sent to our AI provider (Anthropic) to generate your styling estimate and are processed in memory and not stored by Matchbook — we don’t keep the images or write them to a database. We save only a set of qualitative tags derived from the photos — such as an estimated color season and gentle proportion notes like “round face” or “longer legs” — plus plain-language styling notes. These tags describe stable traits, so if you run a new scan it replaces your previous tags entirely rather than adding to them. Style Scan is about style, not size: it never guesses or reports measurements, weight, or clothing sizes. If you choose to add measurements to your profile for better fit, those are optional, entered only by you, and kept separate from Style Scan.

Cookies

Matchbook does not use tracking or advertising cookies. The only cookie we use is an essential cookie to keep you signed in if you create an account. Your profile and preferences themselves are kept in local storage (and, with an account, the secure database above), not in cookies.

How we use information

We use your information solely to generate and improve your recommendations and to operate and secure the site. We do not use it to build advertising profiles.

Service providers we rely on

We keep our vendor list small and use them only to run the service:

  • Vercel — hosts the website.
  • Supabase — provides the secure database and sign-in for optional accounts and our updates list.
  • Anthropic — provides the AI that powers Style Scan. Photos you submit are processed to generate your style tags and are not retained by Matchbook.

These providers process data on our behalf to deliver the service; we do not sell your data to them or anyone else.

We do not sell your personal data

We do not sell your personal data. Matchbook may earn affiliate commission when you choose to buy from a retailer we link to, but that does not involve selling your personal information.

Links to retailers

When you click through to a retailer, you leave Matchbook and are subject to that retailer’s own privacy practices. We encourage you to review their policies.

Your choices and rights

You’re in control of your data. Without an account, everything lives in your browser — clearing your browser storage removes it. With an account, you can edit your profile at any time, and you can request that we delete your account and its data by emailing us. You can unsubscribe from our updates list at any time. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights to access or delete your personal information; email us and we’ll help.

Children’s privacy

Matchbook is intended for adults and is not directed to children under 13. We don’t knowingly collect personal information from children under 13; if you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we’ll delete it.

Changes to this policy

As Matchbook grows, we may update this policy. When we make material changes, we’ll update the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, note the change on this page.
