What is Matchbook?+
Matchbook is a personalized shopping recommendation platform. You tell us about your wardrobe preferences, fit needs, style goals, and budget, and we recommend clothing that suits you — with a plain-language explanation for every pick.
Is Matchbook free to use?+
Yes. Building your style profile and browsing recommendations is free. Matchbook may earn a commission when you buy something through one of our links, at no extra cost to you — see our Affiliate Disclosure for details.
Do I need to create an account?+
No — Matchbook works fully without one. Your profile is saved in your browser. Creating a free account is optional and just lets you sync your profile across devices.
Where does my data live, and who can see it?+
Without an account, your profile stays in your own browser's local storage. If you create an account, it's also saved to a secure database and protected so only your signed-in account can read or change it. We never sell your data. See our Privacy Policy for details.
Does Matchbook sell clothing directly?+
No. Matchbook is a discovery and recommendation platform, not a retailer. We don’t hold inventory, dropship, or process payments — when you’re ready to buy, we send you to the retailer’s own site to complete your purchase.
How does Matchbook make money?+
Through affiliate partnerships. When you click through to a retailer and make a qualifying purchase, we may earn a commission. This never affects how products are ranked — recommendations are based on your fit, style, and preference signals, not on who pays the most.
Do you use AI?+
Selectively. Much of Matchbook runs on transparent, rules-based logic that maps your plain-language answers to styling attributes. We reserve AI for tasks where it adds real value, and we cache results to avoid unnecessary AI calls. Read more on our Responsible AI page.
How does Style Scan handle my photos?+
Photos you upload for Style Scan are analyzed to generate your style tags and are not stored by Matchbook — they’re processed in memory and discarded. We save only qualitative tags derived from them (an estimated color season plus gentle proportion notes like “round face” or “longer legs”) and flattering styling notes. Running a new scan replaces your previous tags entirely. Style Scan is about style, not size — it never guesses or reports measurements, weight, or clothing sizes (those stay optional and are only ever entered by you, for fit). It will ask for clearer photos if the lighting or detail isn’t good enough to tag accurately.
What if a recommendation doesn’t work for me?+
Every piece in the shop has a pair of buttons — more like this, or less like this. Matchbook reads what that piece actually is, then re-sorts everything on the spot, so you see more or less of that kind of thing rather than only that one item. Tap the same button again to undo it. This one changes the ORDER: it moves things up or down, sometimes by several screens, but nothing leaves the shop and you can always find it by filtering. If you want something gone rather than further down, switch the category off instead — see below.
Can I stop seeing a whole category for good?+
Yes, and it’s a different, stronger thing than the more/less buttons. Switch a category off in your profile and it is removed outright — from the shop, from your Daily Matches, and from your recommendations — and it stays off until you switch it back on. Nothing overrides it: it holds even if you tick that category for today, and even if you’ve asked for more of a piece in it. Use the buttons to steer what comes first; use this when you never want to see it at all.
Do you ask about my body type or gender?+
No. Matchbook never asks you to identify a gender. We ask which wardrobe(s) you tend to wear — feminine, masculine, or a mix — purely to help filter styles, and you can browse or shop any wardrobe at any time.
Which stores does Matchbook work with?+
Nordstrom, Nordstrom Rack, Amazon, Macy's, Anthropologie and Everlane, among others. Every piece in the shop is a real product on a real retailer's site, and the link takes you straight there to buy — Matchbook doesn't hold stock or sell anything itself. Prices and availability are stored rather than fetched on every visit, so the retailer's own page is always the final word. We add stores as we go.
Can I delete my data?+
Yes. Data in your browser is removed by clearing your browser storage or using the reset options in the app. If you have an account, email hello@buildmatchbook.com to have your account and its stored data deleted.
